It's not easy for Mercedes Schlapp to serve as the White House's communications strategic advisor. She has to contend with many challenges, such as a President who also serves as his communication director. Schlapp is keeping her eyes on the target, and has been coordinating policy implementation along with White House staff from the Political and Legislative Affairs team and policy shop as well as broader communication. The main areas of her focus has included issues like trade, school safety and opioids. As of now she doesn't deal too much with journalists. She did draw a flurry of attention in March after her name was suggested as a possible replacement for Hope Hicks as communications director. The battle has been bitter. The ally of Schlapp's, Tony Sayegh, and an alternative candidate who is also named Tony began fighting in the news. Schlapp claimed that, following the time the Washington Examiner had published an article that had negative reviews of Sayegh's character, she called Sayegh to have a private discussion.
